Why go

Kibira protects Burundi’s most important montane forest and follows the high Congo–Nile Divide. The experience is quieter than a classic savannah safari: moss, bamboo, layered vegetation, distant bird calls and sudden changes in mist create the atmosphere.

Trails and access conditions can vary with rain, conservation activity and local guidance. Go with an authorised local guide who can confirm the appropriate entry point and current walking options. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed; the forest itself is the reason to come.

02

Experience it well

Take a slow forest walk

The best moments are often small—tracks, calls, unusual leaves and shafts of light. Neutral clothing, patience and a quiet group improve the experience.

Look up for birds

Kibira is recognised for montane-forest birdlife. Binoculars are more useful than a long list of targets, especially for a first visit.

Pair forest and tea

Nearby tea landscapes create a striking visual contrast and make the highland drive part of the day rather than just a transfer.

Know before you go
