Why go
Lake Rwihinda, often called the Bird Lake, rewards patient travellers. The reserve’s open water, floating vegetation and papyrus margins support a changing cast of birdlife, while the surrounding northern landscape feels far removed from Bujumbura.
This is not a high-speed wildlife stop. The pleasure lies in scanning the reeds, listening and moving gently through the wetland. Bird numbers and species vary with season, water levels and migration, so curiosity is more useful than a fixed checklist.

Low voices and slow movement protect the calm of the reserve and usually lead to better sightings.

Because Kirundo is a significant journey from Bujumbura, combine the lake with an overnight and other northern stops.
