Rusizi offers one of Burundi’s most accessible nature experiences. The river and delta wetlands meet the northern end of Lake Tanganyika, supporting hippos, waterbirds and varied vegetation within easy reach of the city.
The shape of a visit depends on water level, local operations and wildlife movement. Some outings focus on a guided boat experience, while others include short land-based observation. Use an experienced operator and follow instructions closely around both hippos and crocodiles.
Experience it well
Go when the wetland is active
Morning usually offers softer light and strong bird activity. A guide can interpret tracks, calls and seasonal changes even when large animals remain distant.
Keep a respectful distance
Hippos are powerful wild animals. Never encourage a boat operator to approach too closely and do not stand between wildlife and the water.
Use it as a gentle first day
The reserve works well after a night in Bujumbura or before an afternoon city visit, without requiring a long road transfer.
